A Very Large Grey Pottery 'Cocoon' Jar
WESTERN HAN DYNASTY, LATE 3RD/2ND CENTURY BC The cocoon-shaped vessel burnished and scored with ten bands of triple-incised lines that surround the body vertically as well as decorative ridges around the neck and base. The shape, named after its similarity to the silkworm cocoon, evolved during the late Warring States period (475 - 221 BC) and then generally died out by the middle of the Western Han.
