VANUATU, EARLY 20TH CENTURY
With a center stalk pointed at both ends, entirely wrapped with a mass of cocoons and spider webs – it is the size of a small human head. Upon this mass is a grotesque, highly distorted human vegetable paste face mask with open, grimacing mouth and pointed teeth. The nose is long and hook-shaped; the eyebrows and head are almost simian in appearance. The name of this particular head effigy is Nangay, according to a 1975 BBC television series called The Tribal Eye, hosted by David Attenborough.
Cocoons, spider webs, vegetable paste, wood.
