Barton Church
AMERICAN, (1926 – 2013) Untitled, 1975 Barton Church was an important part of the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia for over 60 years. Mr. Church was an artist and an instructor in the Barnes Foundation's art program from 1952 until he retired in 2011. He taught the Barnes Foundation’s Traditions course, guiding generations of Barnes students through Byzantine design and form, the Florentines and Venetians, Northern painting, 19th Century masters and into the Foundation’s Cézannes, Renoirs, Matisses, and Picassos. As a student, he studied at the Barnes Foundation from 1949 until 1951 during which time Albert Barnes purchased one of his paintings, Girl in a Chair.
